You decide your boundaries

Do you want to paint your face blue? Do it. Do you want to use your face and body to create a vision board with magazine clippings? Do it. Explore your options, explore your ideas and see where it leads you. Makeup is a brainstorming session, do not limit yourself.

Make a goal to make a mistake 

If your goal is to make a mistake, you can never be wrong. So try something outside of perfection.

Realize that anything you do can be fixed

Makeup is art. No one can define your art but you. If you make a mistake, add it to the look “fix” it. When it comes to makeup, there is nothing that cannot be fixed.

Finish what you start

There have been many makeups that disappointed me halfway through that became my favorite once it was finally finished and I took photos. Keep pressing through. Even if you don’t like the outcome, trust me, you’ve learned something.

Sometimes makeup can take a while

Once I started dabbling in extravagant looks (think: changing myself into Elphaba, green skin included) it took hours. Especially if it was the first time. Just because it take a while does not mean that you aren’t talented and it doesn’t mean that you aren’t doing it right.

If you want to push yourself to explore makeup and start feeling confident about what you’re doing, realize that when it comes to your own makeup and art, you ultimately make the rules.
